Delwende Project

Dedicated to disadvantaged women in Burkina Faso

24/03/2013

Centre Delwende in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, is a shelter for single or abandoned women, widows, rejected, ousted from their villages, accused of bringing misfortunes, with no one helping or protecting them.

Our project

Father Vincenzo Luise, camillian missionary, founded centre Delwende 25 years ago, to shelter homeless and helpless women. (The name Delwende can be roughly translated from the local language in “soul eaters”). In a few years their number reached the hundreds. Those who are able to work do their best to help feed and support all of them: they make oil from cotton seeds, they spoin, they keep a large vegetable garden and they process shea seeds to make shea butter.

Shea butter contains stearic and oleic acids that make it ideal for beauty products. It has moisturizing, soothing, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Ideal for diaper rashes. It is suited for dry and chapped skin making it soft and supple.

The women also use shea butter to make softening and moisturizing soaps.
